How to make AM radio receiver at home with just one transistor and few components

Making AM radio receiver at home is fun. You can to listen to AM broadcasting or do it for small science project for your school or something. Here we want to share one easy to make AM receiver. It just uses enameled copper wires, one 2N3904 general purpose transistor, one 100Kohm resistor, two capacitors of values 10uF and 0.1uF, one 1.5V battery and an earphone to listen to the radio.

Such radio can be made using picture frame and hanged on the wall like the one shown below.

Below is the schematic diagram.

The square box that you see in the schematic is a loop antenna. This loop antenna is shown below.

The copper wire is just wound around the picture frame.

We start by placing components like capacitor as shown below.

And continue to connect the components like in the schematic shown above. The finished AM radio receiver looks like the following.

The components are labelled as shown below.

Now remains is just to put the picture frame together so that it can be hanged on the wall. Note that you have to rotate the picture to get radio signal picked up.

We could have created a PCB for connecting the components. See How to make PCB at home easily or PCB Toner transfer using nail polish remover without heat. But this one is also easy and perhaps a lazy way.

  1. The earliest receivers, before 1897, did not have tuned circuits, they responded to all radio signals picked up by their antennas, so they had little frequency-discriminating ability and received any transmitter in their vicinity.
